Abelia and ODA have named Völur’s Rebecca Wiborg Seyfarth one of Norway’s 50 leading women in tech for 2023. The honor is given to women who excel in understanding technology and have significantly contributed to diversity and inclusion in technology.
“It’s a great honor to be recognized as one of Norway’s leading women in tech,” said Rebecca Wiborg Seyfarth, Völur’s VP Machine Learning. “Technology and innovation are my passion, and it is rewarding to work in a constantly evolving environment where I am presented with daily challenges and opportunities for personal and professional growth. Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to have had the support of exceptional colleagues and leaders who have encouraged me to explore new avenues and step out of my comfort zone. The recognition as one of Norway's 50 leading women in tech for 2023 was a pleasant surprise. I warmly congratulate all the other exceptional women featured on the list.”
Since 2016, the proportion of women in the tech sector in Norway has increased by a marginal 2.2 percentage points, according to recent figures from SSB. ODA and Abelia’s initiative aims to promote female talent and good role models that can help attract more people to technology careers, including those outside the typical recruitment pool. The aim is to increase the proportion of women passionate about working with technology.
"It matters who creates the algorithms and writes the code that makes new solutions work, whether consumer technology, industrial software, or control systems for offshore wind turbines and carbon capture systems. In Norway, we have all the opportunities to choose the education that makes us most relevant for the future. Still, even Norwegian technology businesses are too homogeneous," said Øystein E. Søreide, CEO of Abelia.
Rebecca has a master's degree in modeling and data analysis from the University of Oslo. She joined Völur because the company is solving a problem in the meat industry that has not yet been solved, namely, how to help the meat industry become more optimized and sustainable with the power of data and AI.
“I am motivated by working towards a vision for something my team and I can change for a better future. At Völur, we want to develop a more sustainable future for the meat industry by combining industry experience with data and AI. I am motivated by seeing how I and those I work with can take small steps every day to get closer to this vision. In addition, it's fun to work in a startup where things change quickly, where we constantly question how we do things, and where you can have a big impact on how we work and approach problems,” shares Rebecca.
Before joining Völur, Rebecca spent five years at Cognite, an industrial software company. There, she grew from a data scientist to a tech lead and later engineering manager for her team. At Cognite, she became part of the journey early and Cognite grew from a company with 40 employees and one customer to 650 employees and 85 customers while she was there.
“Rebecca has demonstrated a vast range of competencies and experience through her work at Völur. She has become a pillar in managing complex and core challenges while developing innovative solutions. Rebecca is an excellent leader, encouraging and motivating her team to reach their full potential,” says Adrian Diaz, Chief Operations Officer at Völur.
As of 2023, the share of women at Völur is 40%, and there are 30% females in the leadership team.
“As a technology company, we at Völur are committed to creating an inclusive and diverse work environment,” says Robert Ekrem, CEO of Völur. “To build the best-in-class product, we need more women who bring diverse perspectives and problem-solving approaches, leading to more innovative solutions and a competitive edge in the industry. Having a diverse team with a good gender balance in tech startups helps us attract top talent, improve employee retention rates, and foster a positive company culture that values inclusivity and equality, ultimately leading to greater success and profitability.”
2023 is the first year Völur’s employee has been named a top woman in tech.
